Most Portuguese believe that they maintained the levels of cultural consumption during the Covid-19 pandemic, despite the sector's paralysis, and mainly resorted to the Internet, according to a study released this Thursday.
The data are part of the annual barometer on the perception of culture in Portugal, promoted by the Generator platform, released this Thursday at the online festival and discussion forum Oeiras Ignição Generator. The study also points to the recognition of the insufficiency of public support for culture, during the pandemic, in social, fiscal and financial terms, by more than half of the population.
The study, carried out by the consultancy Qmetrics for Generator, was carried out with a sample of 1,201 people, from a universe of 300 thousand, from 15 years old, from mainland Portugal and islands, designed in order to respect the characteristics of the population. The interviews took place between April 20 and May 7.
According to the compiled data, 55.4% of respondents consider that, during the pandemic and confinement at home, they had the same levels of consumption of cultural activities and products compared to the pre-Covid-19 period. About 17% admitted that they consumed more culture and 24% said that they reduced their consumption of culture, be it watching a movie, reading a book or watching a play.
The majority (57%) also considered that the State was insufficient in supporting Culture during the pandemic and that it should have made more financial, fiscal and social resources available. For 59.5% of the respondents, culture can play a more important role in this phase of experience, taking into account the presence of a new coronavirus, and 10.7% consider that it is less important.
During the period of restrictions on circulation, 60.9% of the Portuguese made purchases over the Internet, and, in the case of Culture, they mainly bought books (23.4%) and films or series (8.4%). In the same period, more than 93% of respondents watched films, 55% saw a concert on the Internet or on television and 21.6% saw theater.
While circulation restrictions lasted, 34.2% were available to pay to see a film or series and 20% to see a concert on the Internet.
Faced with a scenario of return to normality, in September or January, the Portuguese respondents are more confident and safe in 2021 and 82.8% consider that each person has the responsibility to prevent the spread of the virus.
Assuming that, in 2021, there will be no movement restrictions, 49.6% of the Portuguese respondents say that they imagine going back to the music festivals and, 48.5%, to the concert halls.
During the confinement period, access to information was mainly made through television, social networks and media sites. "Newspapers and magazines on paper are a medium, effectively, in disuse in any age group, while social networks are extraordinarily strong between 15 and 34 years old", says the study.
Asked about support for Culture, 85% of respondents said that companies should invest and support the sector more.
The online festival Oeiras Ignição Generator, which runs until Saturday, will feature the participation of “more than 40 names of culture and creativity”, including Vhils, Salvador Sobral, Grada Kilomba, Capicua, Matilde Campilho and Rui Horta, at which includes the commissioner of the National Arts Plan, Paulo Pires do Vale, and the Minister of Culture, Graça Fonseca.
