Producer Portuguese Luís Urbano was invited to join the American Film Academy, which annually awards the Oscars, announced this institution.
The name of the producer, among others, “Cartas da Guerra”, by Ivo M. Ferreira, and “Tabu”, by Miguel Gomes, is on the list of 819 new members invited by the American academy, released on Tuesday. In a statement, the academy reveals that “in the ‘class’ of 2020 45% are women, 36% people from underrepresented ethnic/racial communities and 49% foreigners from 68 countries.”
Among the new invited members, in addition to the Portuguese Luís Urbano, are the actresses Yalitza Aparicio, protagonist of the film “Roma”, Jang Hye-Jin, from the cast of “Parasites”, Eva Longoria, one of the protagonists of the television series “Desperate Housewives”, the actor George McKay, who joined the casts of “Capitão Fantástico” and “1917”, the pianist and composer Michael Nyman, the trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and the producer Rosalie Varda, daughter of the director Agnès Varda.
In 2018, Portuguese director Regina Pessoa, sound editor Nelson Ferreira and designer Luís Sequeira, both Canadians with roots in Portugal, were also invited to join the American Film Academy.
