This Monday, director Sérgio Graciano starts shooting the fictional film “Salgueiro Maia – O implicado”, about one of the captains who led the April 1974 revolution, this Monday was announced.
Presented as "the first portrait, to be projected on the big screen, of what is considered the hero and the purest symbol of April 25, 1974", the film is headed by actor Tomás Alves in the role of Salgueiro Maia. According to distributor Cinemundo, the shooting will take place over the next seven weeks in Lisbon, Santarém, Pombal and Castelo de Vide. The film, produced by Sky Dreams Entertainment, is scheduled to premiere on October 1.
Through a modern, intimate and emotional approach, ‘Salgueiro Maia – O Implicado’ portrays the stories that have not yet been told about the captain of Abril, ”reads the press release.
The argument is by João Lacerda de Matos from a biography signed by António de Sousa Duarte on the “captain of April”. In addition to Tomás Alves, the film's cast will include, among others, Tiago Teotónio Pereira, Filipa Areosa and Gabriela Barros.
Fernando Salgueiro Maia was born in Castelo de Vide, in 1944, made military campaigns in Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau, having ascended to the position of captain in 1971. As a delegate of the Cavalry Weapon, he was part of the Coordinating Committee of the Armed Forces Movement ( MFA).
On April 25, 1974, he commanded the military column that, starting from the Escola Prática de Cavalaria, in Santarém, occupied Praça do Comércio and surrounded the Quartel do Carmo, in Lisbon, leading to the surrender of the then president of the Council, Marcello Caetano, and the definitive fall of the Estado Novo. He died on April 3, 1992, at the age of 47.
“Salgueiro Maia – o Implicado” is co-produced with the Colombian producer 11:11 Films & Tv, supported by RTP, Instituto do Cinema e audiovisual, Turismo de Portugal and Lisbon City Hall. Sérgio Graciano works mainly in television, having the name associated, for example, with the series “Tell me how it was”, with the soap operas “Laços de Sangue” and “Prisioneira”, and with the program “Último a sai”.
In 2020, the first fiction feature film, “Assim Assim” (2010), was premiered, followed by “Uma vida À awaiting” (2016), “Perdidos” (2017) and “blood lines” (2018). This year, Sérgio Graciano should open two other films, according to information on the IMDB portal: “The impossibility of being alone” and “The sound that descends on Earth”.
